| Product Review: Super Joints, by Pavel Tsatsouline This product review was written by me, Nathan Donahue and is my opinion only. I write these reviews to give readers feedback on some the great and not so great fitness products in the marketplace. Today I decided to review another book in my fitness collection called Super Joints, by Pavel Tsatsouline. If you missed my product review on Power to the People, by Pavel Tsatsouline then you can check it out too. The purpose of this book is to teach people how to improve the health and mobility of their joints. Most books written about mobility focus on flexibility but not this book, there are no real stretches for the muscles listed here, only movements to loosen up the joints themselves. As is usual with Pavel's books, there is no fluff. The book is concise at about 100 pages, and each page is filled with quality information. Pavel begins the book explaining why he believes joint health is so important and underrated, then teaches the reader how to improve their own joint's condition. He describes a series of drills for each joint to really lube and loosen them up. I have used his drills on many occasions and can attest that I always feel better after going through the series. In fact, back in 2006 my right hip seized up on my from doing back squats too frequently. I used Super Joints along with proper physiotherapy to bring my hip back to normal is 10 weeks. Super Joints is a great reference manual for how and why to improve the health of your joints. It shows you how to stave off arthritis and stay as mobile as you are supposed to. With all the drills listed you will be able to find some that really meet your needs of the trouble joint(s) you may have. I use a lot of the drills he lists in my warm-up before Muay Thai training or any sprinting workouts I do. I focus mostly on the hip drills he lists, but obviously you should tailor it for your needs. I believe these drills should be implemented by athletes before any athletic endeavor. It is much more important to warm-up the joints than to stretch muscles before exercise. If there is one point of criticism I have for this book it is that some of the exercises are hard to figure out. This is not really Pavel's fault, it is a book and some of the exercises are hard to explain with just words and pictures. Some of the drills listed are very simple and will remind you of gym class, but some are way out there and will require you to try several times to figure out. I did say that this book does not teach you to stretch, but I should mention it does help you improve mobility and flexibility. Flexibility is improved not just through improving the joint's mobility, but also with the use of dynamic flexibility drills. Pavel teaches his readers to improve range of motion with dynamic drills that teach the muscles to move through a greater range of motion. In closing, I am a big fan of this book (like you couldn't tell already). It is the only book I have found that satisfactorily taught me to improve the health and mobility of my joints, something I take very seriously. I wish it had more information in it, but that is only because the information that is in there is so good! This review is only my opinion so if you want to learn more, click on the image below and learn more about Super Joints! |
