Two-A-Days, not just for Football Players
By Nathan Donahue

In football, two-a-days are probably the most dreaded aspect of
training camp, except for cuts. But coaches all schedule them because
it gets their athlete's in top physical condition fast and it separates the
men from the boys.

Since I moved to Calgary, I joined a Muay Thai gym with a full weight
room right between where I live and where I work. Being the training
obsessed person that I am, I quickly realized I had an opportunity to
test out these coach's theory.

Lately I have been doing two training sessions a day and the results
have been fantastic. I generally do weights on my lunch break and
Muay Thai after work. Since starting my two a day regime my
metabolism has been on fire!

I am always hungry, eating everything I see, yet at the same time
losing weight. Down about 10 pounds from what I thought was a lean
215 lbs. I am probably at my all time leanest and not dieting at all; in
fact, I am always on the hunt for more calories! I know, hooray for me;
but seriously you can apply this to your own fitness regime as well.

When doing two a days, you essentially workout for the same amount
of time per day (about one to one and a half hours). By breaking it up
into two short snappy workouts you keep you motivated and keep the
metabolism revved up. After a lunch time workout my metabolism is
elevated due to the weight training session, then before it even has a
chance to go down, I am doing a Muay Thai class. Besides, who wants
to sit in a depressing lunch room on their break? I can't stand it!

I only lift weights for about  a half an hour at lunch, all compound
movements of course. So, for example, I would do front squats for
about 10 sets of 5 reps. Then, when I get back to the gym after work,
Muay Thai is about an hour of very intense conditioning. Now, by
intense I mean wondering if you will soon die and trying to hold down
your last meal. Then done, oh and by the way, you'll have abs without
eating like a rabbit.

Now, if you don't practice martial arts or an intense sport like soccer or
rugby, that's fine too. I would recommend running hill sprints, doing
kettlebell training, or going to conditioning classes that aren't too
fruity. Sorry if your in to Jazzercise or Body Pump but those are really
fruity.

To be honest, why the heck don't you do sports? Is there really a
better way to get some exercise in than playing a game? Nope. Sports
make you work harder because the fun makes you forget your actually
... gasp ... exercising! And, correct me if I'm wrong, but other than
being intimate with a pretty girl, aren't sports the most fun thing in the
world to do?

I am getting off track here, but the point I am trying to make is
conditioning plus weight training is a must for top physical
performance and appearance. Personally I think splitting the two
components into separate sessions is ideal for results.

So why not try a two-a-day program for yourself and see what
happens? You might be surprised at the lean, athletic body living
under that layer of fat you have. Plus, I heard chicks dig abs....hot
chicks!
