| What has happened to lifting weights? By Nathan Donahue People don't lift weights anymore. Seriously, they don't. I have been to gyms all across Canada and very few of them have real weightlifters in them. Powerlifters and Olympic Lifters all that remain of a once proud way of life. These days people say they lift weights, but all they really do is wave their arms around, do the machines, and wipe sweat off their forehead. It's pathetic. One day I am going to open a place where people just hang out and pretend to work out. I will have nice ferns in the corners, play dance music, hand TV's up real high and not play the sound for some strange reason, give people little white towels that don't wrap around their waists. I will fill it with cool machines that you can sit and stand on real comfortably and talk about pecs and lats. I will hire little man-boys with frosted tips to flirt with girls and stop anyone from lifting heavy. The will call themselves Jedi names like Master Trainer and Elite Trainer even though they have never competed in any form of physical event except maybe a long distance run. I will call this place a "Health Club", and your initiation will be to drink a fruity "health drink" and wear spandex that rides up your butt. One day I will do this, but for I will focus on less lucrative ideas like lifting heavy weights and practicing Thai Boxing. To give you an idea of what weightlifting used to be, check out this video. I firmly believe that you should lift weights in preparation for some kind of mortal struggle. Like you are about to go to jail and have to protect your ass, literally. Or some dude just punched your girlfriend at a bar. Now, let me ask you this, if a situation like this just went down, would you wish you hadn't gotten really strong and powerfully? Or would you be really happy that you got toned, sculpted and nice guns? Mind you, I am not saying to bulk up and get fat...I am saying that one should lift weights to be strong and powerful. You can and probably should play a sport or do some conditioning so you don't end up a fat bastard like I once was!!!! Lift weights to get strong, do exercise to stay lean. How do you get strong? Easy, do these exercises, Squat or Front Squat, Deadlift, Clean and Press, Bench Press, Chin-up. Done, that is it. Now do heavy weight, nothing over 8 reps, do lots of sets, 3-10, and train as often as you can while staying as fresh as possible. So, if you feel like crap don't lift weights, if you feel good, lift. Pretty simple right. Here is an example: Go to the gym or your home gym if you have one. Do one of the exercises I listed for 10 sets of 2 reps as heavy as possible. These do not include warm up sets. Then do a finisher such as push your car around the block a few times. Then drink a giant protein shake with tasty stuff added to it. Then lie down and take a nap. Repeat as soon as you feel ready to rock again. As for tips, train like you are going to jail in a month. If that doesn't motivate you I question your sanity. For more tips on getting crazy strong, check out Dinosaur Training. |
